A Literacy Project to Foster Reading and Writing in South African Primary Schools
Open Books ~ Open Minds has provided over 20,000 books as of 2015 to schools in South Africa. Many of the books for the classroom and school libraries have been donated through community book drives in the U.S. It is set up as a Donor Advised Fund through South Africa Partners. Other books have been purchased through a special fund set up for Open Books ~ Open Minds. They include non-fiction and fiction trade books that align with the national curriculum; sets of readers; and reference books, including over 1,200 student dictionaries. A series of workshops have also been developed to match the needs of the schools and to promote the inclusion of important best practices in literacy instruction.
