Many studies show that inequitable pay continues to hinder diversity in leadership across all sectors. The nonprofit world is no exception. Building a workforce that drives real change goes beyond hiring and retaining talent. It’s about fair pay, centering equity in our policies and practices, and fostering leadership growth. These elements are crucial as we plan our compensation strategies to support the sector’s growth.
At TSNE, we believe that our strength comes from the communities we serve. We are committed to creating tools like the Valuing our Nonprofit Workforce (VONW) report, which not only provide measurable insights, but also elevate voices from community leaders and those most impacted by marginalization. Job roles within community activism, advocacy, and other vital roles are often left out of the compensation data collection and discussions. Our VONW report aims to change that by including data from these crucial yet overlooked positions, making our findings a true reflection of our diverse nonprofit workforce.
In my role as Chief People and Culture Officer, I delve into the complexities of organizational culture, people development, policy development, and the quality-of-life issues tied to employment and nonprofit operations. Through months of data collection, content development, and now sharing these findings, my focus remains on providing resources that empower nonprofit leaders with the data needed to make equitable compensation decisions.
With VONW, you can deepen your knowledge of:
- Compensation Disparities: Explore pay gaps that exist, not just in leadership, but across different organizational roles and sizes.
- Impact of Economic Environment: Understand how the economic landscape has shifted compensation practices in the nonprofit sector.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Gain insights into how nonprofits are integrating DEI practices into their compensation strategies, policy development, and organizational practices.
Finally, we are immensely grateful to every collaborator who helped to make this report a reality.
To Funders, Partners, and Supporters: We are deeply grateful for your generosity with time and treasure. Your contributions breathe life into our mission, allowing us to continue making our research accessible and available. We are committed to upholding your trust with diligence and integrity, providing free access to salary data and analysis for all nonprofits.
To Survey Participants: We’re pleased to include data from over 200 nonprofit organizations in the survey region, listed in the Appendix. The report’s strength is rooted in the insights of our survey participants, forming the foundation of our knowledge as we navigate nonprofit compensation with clarity and purpose.
To Nonprofit Staff: Our appreciation goes to the unsung heroes who form the backbone of our organizations and our communities. Nonprofit staff, your dedication is commendable. This report highlights a truth: your financial compensation may not fully reflect your significant contributions to your organization. Yet, you persist in your commitment to your communities despite this challenge. Your resilience and unwavering dedication are sources of inspiration. To all of you, we extend our gratitude and respect.
And of course, to all readers, nonprofit champions, and any other pay equity advocates, we encourage you to join this community effort by reviewing the report and its accompanying salary database, applying its insights and sharing your experiences.
