TSNE Communities

Boston Neighborhood Support

Boston Neighborhood Support is one of the oldest nonprofits in the state, founded as The Howard Benevolent Society in 1812 by a group of concerned Bostonians. Inspired by the humanitarian work of English philanthropist John Howard, the group met in their homes to discuss the needs of neighbors who were struggling and created this organization in response. For over 200 years, Boston Neighborhood Support has been responding to the needs of elderly folks and families in Boston. They have maintained their mission and unique place in the community by continuing to provide direct services.

Typically, they work with over 200 households per year providing financial assistance for rent, heating oil, gas, and electricity. They work with clients from all neighborhoods in Boston, the majority living in the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, and the South End. They assist seniors, families and individuals with the largest group being single parent households.
