Compensation and Benefits Report for Nonprofits Now Released

Boston, Mass. June 9, 2014 — TSNE has released findings from Valuing Our Nonprofit Workforce 2014: A Compensation and Benefits Survey of and for Nonprofits in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Adjoining Communities, providing searchable salary and benefits information for small to midsized nonprofits. TSNE worked with organizations and foundation partners from the region to survey 250 nonprofits on their compensation practices. More than 31,000 people are employed by the 250 nonprofits that completed the survey. Data collected was compiled on over 23,000 individual salaries and categorized into 134 job titles.

“This data represents an often overlooked portion of our nonprofit sector, small to midsized social justice organizations. There are thousands of small nonprofits in our area with under $2 million in revenue and sometimes with fewer than 5 staff members. These groups individually are small but collectively make up a significant portion of our nonprofit workforce. The report and searchable database are free resources for these nonprofits and others to help them assess their compensation and benefits levels compared with other, similar groups,” says Jonathan Spack, Executive Director, TSNE.

TSNE commissioned the survey in response to frequent requests from nonprofit executive directors, board members and consultants for compensation data relevant to staff and management positions at smaller nonprofit organizations. Prior to the release of Valuing Our Nonprofit Workforce, few compensation surveys in the area were specific to small to medium sized nonprofit organizations.

The compensation survey distinguishes between organizations in different fields of nonprofit service and issues such as youth work, the environment and economic justice. It also includes other hard to find data about jobs that are specific to the nonprofit sector.

“We have a very diverse sampling of data that helps to create a picture of nonprofit compensation practices. With this report we hope to encourage not just our nonprofit colleagues, but all employers to model appropriate compensation practices by providing livable wages and benefits for employees,” says Lyn Freundlich, Director of Administration and Human Resources, TSNE. “Our data indicates that as the economy is slowly recovering nonprofits are beginning to give their employees a small raise in salary and benefits. But we also found that 43% of the staff represented in this survey earns under $28,000 annually, so there are still many who are struggling to make ends meet. We hope this report provides information nonprofits need to build and maintain a sustainable and professional workforce.”

Some Salary Findings:

  • 71% of participating organizations have salary increases budgeted in their current fiscal year. This seems to indicate improved economic conditions since we conducted our 2010 survey, when just 58% of organizations reported salary increase budgets.
  • 43% of the staff represented in the survey are earning less than $28,000.
  • 574 individuals hold the 10 highest paying jobs. Of those, 56% are women and 44% are men; 90% are white. On the other hand, of the 7,453 individuals in the survey holding the 10 lowest paying job titles, 61% are women. 40% are white, which means that people of color hold 10% of the highest paying jobs and 60% of the lowest.

Some Benefits Findings:

  • 90% of the groups that responded provide some type of health insurance to employees at an average cost to the organization of $628 per month. A full 12% of survey respondents pay 100% of the premiums for employees and a full 41% pay at least 20% of insurance premiums.
  • 52% offer long-term disability coverage. 68% of these pay 100% of the premium. 43% provide short-term disability plans. 56% pay 100% of the premium.
  • 71 % provide some sort of retirement plan for employees. 66 % contribute to it
  • 90% of surveyed nonprofits offer some type of medical insurance to full-time employees. A significant number pay 80% or more of individual’s premiums.
